A 50 year old American woman, Lalita Kayi, was recently discovered chained to a tree in a remote forest in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra, India. Her discovery has shocked the nation and raised many questions about her mental health and the circumstances that led her to this situation.

Ms Kayi was found on the 27th of July 2024 by a local cow herder who was tending to his cattle. He heard loud screams coming from the forest, prompting him to investigate. He was shocked to find Ms Kayi with one of her legs shackled to a tree. "She was screaming like an animal", he recounted. The herder quickly alerted other villagers, who contacted the local police. The police arrived, sawed off the chain, and rescued her.

Ms Kayi appeared severely emaciated and was immediately taken to a local hospital. After stabilising her physical health, she was transferred to a psychiatric facility for further treatment. Dr Sanghamitra Phule, the superintendent of the hospital where Ms Kayi is currently being treated, said, "Her condition is improving. She eats, walks, and also exercises. She is under treatment, and we are also giving her some nutrients that her body was lacking".

Upon being rescued, Ms Kayi initially told the police that her husband had chained her to the tree and left her without food or water. She claimed to have survived for 40 days in this condition. However, police questioned the plausibility of this statement, noting the extreme unlikelihood of surviving without food or water for such a prolonged period.

The investigation took a turn when Ms Kayi later informed the police that she was not married and that she may have been hallucinating when she gave her first statement. Police officials indicated that Ms Kayi was distressed over her visa situation and financial troubles, which likely contributed to her state of mind. It is believed that she bought the chains and locks herself and tied herself to the tree.

Authorities discovered a copy of her passport, identifying her as a US citizen from Massachusetts, along with other documents listing a home address in Tamil Nadu, India. She was also found in possession of a mobile phone, a tablet, and approximately €340 (31,000 rupees). Given her initial inability to speak, Ms Kayi communicated with the police and medical staff by writing notes.

The US embassy has refused to comment on the case, citing her right to privacy. However, it has been confirmed that Ms Kayi's family in the United States has been contacted and she is now in communication with them.

The police investigation continues as they work to piece together the events leading to her distressing situation. Saurabh Agarwal, the superintendent of police for Sindhudurg, stated, "We are looking into all aspects of the case to ensure a complete understanding of what occurred".
