Residents of the Quetzapotitla community in Tlaquilpa, located in the Zongolica mountain range, are on edge following a series of unusual cattle deaths that have led some to suspect the infamous "Chupacabra."
The incidents, which have been widely discussed on social media, involve cows, sheep, and goats found dead with significant injuries but not consumed, as would be expected from typical natural predators in the region. The peculiar nature of these attacks has prompted locals to formally request assistance from authorities.
The community reports that the animals are being attacked in a specific manner, with serious wounds found on their necks or lower abdomens. In some instances, the victims have been dismembered. Despite these severe injuries, the bodies of the animals are not eaten, a behaviour that contrasts sharply with known predators in the area.
"The concern is so real that they have formally requested the support of the corresponding authorities", read one social media post. In the intital few hours alone, at least nine animals had been reported dead, prompting an urgent call for intervention by the municipal police.
Local citizens have been vigilant, sharing images and details of the attacks online. "Citizens have reportedly pointed out that the possible 'Chupacabra' attacks their cattle by biting and leaving serious wounds on the neck or lower abdomen, going so far as to dismember its victims, something they have captured on their plots", another message stated.
While the mysterious deaths have led many to speculate about the Chupacabra, a mythical creature said to attack livestock, some residents offer more plausible explanations. There are suggestions that a jaguar or a panther might be responsible. However, this theory is met with scepticism as the typical signs of predation, such as the consumption of the prey, are absent.
"Despite the above, there are those who prefer to think that rather than a 'Chupacabra', it could be a jaguar or a panther, but the reality is that they do not see it as viable, since the rest of the cattle have no signs of having been injured and in the case of the victims, they were not eaten", a local shared.
In response to the escalating situation, the community hopes that local authorities will conduct a thorough investigation and provide the necessary protection to prevent further losses. The unique circumstances surrounding the deaths have brought the issue to the forefront of public attention, highlighting the need for swift and effective action.
