In 1889 a mysterious respiratory illness emerged from Russia which soon spread around the world, triggering three waves of infection over a few years.
Dubbed the "Russian flu", some scientists now believe that the virus may have been caused by a similar type virus to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid-19.
There were similar measure brought in during the time of the Russian flu, for example schools and places of work were closed to try and stop the spread of the virus.
On top of this there were some similarities in the symptoms seen by both SARS-CoV-2 and the Russian flu, lose of sense of taste and smell and some people reported long term side affects after getting the Russian flu.
Other similarities have been observed where the Russian flu seemed to kill more elderly people than children.
With that said it's still only speculative that a SARS-CoV-2 like virus was responsible for what we know as the Russian flu.
Further research is being done to test preserved lung samples from individuals that were infected with the Russian flu, as of yet there is no hard evidence to conclude that a coronavirus type virus was to blame for the Russian flu.
