Tokyo, Japan – Japanese lawmakers have taken steps to form a nonpartisan group dedicated to urging the government to create an organisation for investigating unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), commonly known as UFOs. This initiative comes in response to growing concerns over national security and technological advancements.

The newly formed group will be led by Yasukazu Hamada, the parliamentary affairs leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), with former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, also from the LDP, acting as secretary general.

A preparatory meeting was held on Tuesday in parliament, with plans for the group's founding general meeting set for June 6th 2024.

The establishment of this group aims to push the government to gather and analyse information on UAPs, following the example set by the United States. The U.S. government has already created a specialised organisation within the Defence Department to probe these phenomena.

In its founding statement, the group highlighted the potential security risks posed by UAPs, stating that if these phenomena are "cutting-edge secret weapons or unmanned spy drones from other countries, they would present a major security threat to Japan".

The group's initiative underscores the need for comprehensive investigation and international cooperation. They plan to collaborate with their U.S. counterparts to better understand and address the implications of UAP sightings.

Members of parliament from all political parties have been invited to join this effort, reinforcing the nonpartisan nature of the group. This inclusive approach aims to ensure a unified and thorough investigation into the phenomena that have been reported over Japanese territory.

By fostering cooperation and data sharing with the United States, Japan aims to enhance its understanding and preparedness regarding these unexplained aerial events.
