A person has died at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on Wednesday the 30th May 2024 after becoming trapped in a running aircraft engine, police have confirmed. The tragic incident involved KLM flight KL1341, which was scheduled to depart for Billund, Denmark.
The Dutch airline KLM has issued a statement expressing their sorrow and confirming that they are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident. "We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol", KLM said. The airline added that "the circumstances are currently under investigation".
Dutch media reports indicate that the aircraft's engine was running at the time of the incident, suggesting that the plane was preparing for takeoff. Photos obtained by Dutch national broadcaster NOS show emergency services surrounding the passenger jet on the airport's apron, where aircraft are parked.
A spokesperson for the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (Royal Military Police) stated that the investigation is ongoing and it is too early to determine whether the death was an accident or a form of suicide. The deceased has not yet been identified. "It is too early to say whether this was an 'incident', or a form of suicide", the spokesperson said.
The flight to Billund, which was scheduled to depart at 2:25 pm, eventually left at 2:59 pm according to Schiphol's website. All passengers and crew, many of whom witnessed the incident, were safely removed from the plane. "All passengers and employees had safely left the plane", the spokesperson confirmed.
Schiphol Airport also expressed its condolences via a post on X, describing the incident as "horrible". The post stated, "Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this".
Reports suggest that the victim could have been an employee involved in the pushback operation of the aircraft, a short-haul Embraer jet used by KLM's Cityhopper service for flights within Europe.
This incident echoes past tragedies in the aviation industry. In 2023, an airport worker in Texas died after being "ingested" into an engine at San Antonio International Airport. Similarly, in January 2023, another worker in Alabama was pulled into an engine.
Investigations are ongoing.
