In a recent discussion at the 2024 Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles, Elon Musk, CEO and founder of SpaceX, expressed his skepticism regarding the notion of alien visitation to Earth.
During a panel titled "How to save the human race and other light topics", Musk addressed the topic when questioned by Michael Milken, the institute's chairman. Musk responded to the concept of seeking out new life forms, as portrayed in "Star Trek", stating, "Yeah, that's the idea".
However, Musk elaborated on his doubts about extraterrestrial visitors to our planet. He highlighted the absence of compelling evidence despite SpaceX's extensive satellite operations. Musk mentioned, "I've not seen any evidence of aliens", adding, "not once have we had to maneuver around a UFO".
While acknowledging the widespread belief in alien visitation, Musk juxtaposed it with scepticism towards the moon landing, prompting laughter from the audience.
Despite his scepticism, Musk expressed openness to considering compelling proof of alien existence. He stated, "If somebody has evidence of aliens... then I'd love to see it, love to hear about it".
Moreover, Musk raised concerns about the lack of evidence for alien civilizations in the universe. He posed the question of why, if such civilizations existed, they hadn't explored or settled the Milky Way galaxy.
Musk likened human civilization to a "tiny candle in a vast darkness", emphasising the need to ensure its continuity.
However, a fact check reveals that Musk's statement about Starlink satellites not having to manoeuvre around UFOs contradicts data. Starlink satellites regularly perform avoidance manoeuvres to dodge debris or other spacecraft. Between June 1, 2023, and Nov. 30, 2023, SpaceX reported to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that Starlink satellites conducted 24,410 collision avoidance manoeuvres.
While Musk remains sceptical of alien visitation, the complexities of space operations continue to unfold, raising questions about humanity's place in the universe.
