Pupils at RA Padayachee Primary School, located north of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), have left both educators and guardians unsettled due to reports of alarming behaviour, with some suggesting signs of possession.

Concerns reached a climax on Tuesday, 7th May, prompting an urgent assembly of teachers and parents at the school. It was reported that numerous pupils, predominantly girls, exhibited symptoms allegedly associated with malevolent spirits. The distressing events culminated in a boy child also displaying similar behaviour on Wednesday, 8th May.

According to a member of the School Governing Body (SGB), Mthokozisi Bafana DaSilva, the situation had been escalating over several days. "The principal told us the incidents have been happening for days. It started with a few kids, but on Monday, 6th May, almost the whole class started screaming", DaSilva remarked. "After the incident, teachers sent pupils home".

Approximately 30 pupils were affected, prompting their early dismissal from school, with some being sent home as early as 10am. The manifestation of distress among the students included screaming, erratic behaviour such as jumping around and pushing desks, and making frightening noises. Witnessing such scenes understandably caused trauma among their peers.

Parents, too, voiced their anxieties, particularly regarding the forthcoming second term exams. DaSilva, whose own son attends the school, expressed this shared concern. "As parents, we're worried about the upcoming second term exams", he remarked.

Adding to the unease is a similar incident reported at a neighbouring school two months prior. Speculations among some parents hint at a possible link to Satanism, with one parent noting, "We've never experienced anything like this with our kids before the Satanistic church was established here".

In response to the escalating situation, the school has scheduled a special prayer session for Sunday, 12th May, with the assistance of pastors. This spiritual intervention reflects the community's inclination towards religious guidance in confronting what they perceive as a supernatural affliction.

Despite the reliance on spiritual remedies, concerns remain regarding the underlying causes of the distressing behaviour. Mental health professionals may need to be involved to offer support and counselling to the affected students. Additionally, an investigation into potential environmental factors or recent changes within the school's ecosystem may provide insights into preventing future occurrences and ensuring the well-being of all pupils.
