Rice University has embarked on a pioneering two year research study focusing on the phenomenon of 'alien abduction', a topic of much intrigue and debate towards the end of the 20th century. The university's Archives of the Impossible is collaborating with the John Mack Institute to undertake this significant project, which will involve anonymising and analysing various archival collections related to these mysterious experiences.

Austin, a key figure in the project, stated, “Archives of the Impossible is presently undertaking a two-year meta-data research study in collaboration with the John Mack Institute”. He highlighted the groundbreaking nature of the study in terms of its "methodology, scope, and scale".

The research aims to bring new insights into a field often overlooked or misunderstood by mainstream science and academia over the past 30 years. "The study is significant and some might say long overdue", Austin remarked. He expressed his enthusiasm about collaborating with Jeff Kripal, Amanda Focke, and numerous dedicated students from Rice University on this unique venture.

The initiative is not only academic. It has already inspired two international conferences hosted at Rice, praised by Kathleen Canning, Dean of Humanities, as "the largest, most ambitious and most transgressive" in engaging with the authors and Archives of the Impossible at the university. Plans are underway for a third conference in 2025.

Kripal, involved in the archival project, emphasised the multidisciplinary nature of the study, which spans across physics, philosophy, genetics, anthropology, history, art, astronomy, and biology. “To study the impossible is to study everything”, he explained.

The archives are currently open for research, inviting a broad spectrum of individuals ranging from sceptics to believers, and including scholars from diverse fields and individuals who have experienced paranormal phenomena. "Whether you’re a sceptic or a believer, there’s something in these archives that will spark your imagination", Focke stated.

The archive has also attracted attention from the media, with half a dozen production crews visiting the site in recent years. According to Focke, the range of visitors has been wide, from mere curious onlookers to academics and those personally touched by paranormal occurrences.

Kripal also noted the commonality of such impossible events, saying, "They are extremely common, and we only think that they’re rare because our culture suppresses them and says that they don’t happen when they do". He stressed the importance of these archives for future generations, hoping that the material will be used creatively by those who follow.

Rice University continues to be at the forefront of exploring these enigmatic experiences, aiming to shed light on phenomena that challenge our understanding of reality.
