In April 2019 the Parkes telescope in Australia detected a signal that got the attention of researchers. Researchers from the Breakthrough Listen Project (BLP) are carefully examining the signal to see what can be ascertained from it.
The signal, named BLC1 with a signal of 982.002MHz has not been attributed to an Earth based or any near Earth human created source. This signal has been said to be the most interesting signal since 1977 when the 'WOW!' signal was recorded.
The location that the signal is believed to originate from is known as Proxima Centauri, its a low mass star from the triple star Alpha Centauri system. Proxima Centauri is the closest star to Earth after our own sun at 4.2 light years away, it's also eight times smaller than our own sun.
Proxima c is a gas giant and Proxima b is a rocky planet both orbiting Proxima Centauri in the habitable zone. There are also suggestions that a third planet could exist.
Pete Worden, the director of Breakthrough Initiatives said that the signals are most likely interference from Earth based technologies.
Other researchers have also said that it is "very unlikely" that the source of the signal was from alien technology.
