Around the 1st of November 2021 the investigation into the disappearance of Amy Fitzpatrick in Spain was suspended after the investigation had run since Amy's disappearance in 2008 as she made her way home from a friend's house on the Costa Del Sol. Deputy Flanagan the Garda Commission confirmed in a letter that, "Liaison has taken place with the Commander in Charge of the investigation into the disappearance of Amy Fitzpatrick.".

"The Commander has confirmed that the investigation remains open, however suspended, pending further or new information that may assist in the investigation."

"The Commander further confirmed that there is a direct and open channel of communication between Christine Kenny and the Guardia Civil's family liaison officer in this case and there has been recent direct communication between both."

"An Garda Siochana will continue to be available to assist in the investigation."

Amy's disappearance occurred on New Year's day 2008, on this day at approximately 10pm Amy, 15 at the time said goodbye to her friend Ashley Rose and should have arrived home a few minutes later but she never did. Amy was babysitting Ashley's brother at a house in Mijas Costa in Málaga, Spain.

Following Amy's failure to arrive home from the short trip after babysitting, Amy's mother and step father reported Amy missing 3 days after the night she failed to arrive home. A search was started and the search involved hundreds of people under the speculation that this was not a case of abduction.

To try and get answers, Amy's mother Audrey Fitzpatrick has used private investigators since the disappearance in 2008, the investigators being those that were involved in looking into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

In August 2008 the home of Mahon and Fitzpatrick's lawyer was broken into in Riviera Del Sol where a laptop specifically used in the search for Amy was stolen as was Fitzpatrick's mobile phone.

Juan José de la Fuente Teixidó, the 32 year old lawyer said that the intruders got into his property by forcing a garden gate, he went on to say, "The stolen documents included confidential police reports about Fitzpatrick's disappearance. I believe the burglary was related to Fitzpatrick's disappearance. It makes no sense that they took documents which financially are worthless, and left behind all my expensive valuables like TVs, computers and music equipment.".

In May 2011 a police report claimed that three witnesses had reported seeing Amy with an unknown blonde woman in the Trafalgar Bar in Calahonda's El Zoo center hours after her last reported sighting.

In May 2012 it was reported that an Irish gangland killer, Eric "Lucky" Wilson had murdered Amy. Amy was said to have been seen out with an older man on the night she disappeared who her family believe to be Wilson. Amy's parents believe the piece of information about who murdered Amy to be credible but to date no body has been found.

In 2013 Amy's 23 year old brother, Dean Fitzpatrick was stabbed to death in Coolock, Dublin by Dave Mahon, Amy and Dean's mothers partner. Dave Mahon was found not guilty of murder on the 6th of May 2016 but found guilty of manslaughter of his stepson Dean Fitzpatrick and was sentenced to 7 years in prison of which he served only 5.

There have been a lot of different views on what might have happened on the night of Amy's disappearance but there is little to no evidence to point to any concrete chain of events. It has also been called out on a number of occasions over the years that the Irish Government has done very little, if anything to help Amy's family get answers, with allegedly no contact from the department of foreign affairs and Amy's family.

Amy's mother is currently living with Dave Mahon in Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim and Mahon is awaiting trial for allegedly assaulting an elderly neighbour.
