Ireland Report / Story
An investigation has been launched by Gardaí in Cork after a family pet cat was found killed in a "horrific, sadistic and brutal butchering.".

The Persian cat Bella was one of three beloved family pets went missing from her home in Ballynoe near Castlelyons at the end of August 2022.

Bella's owner, Finola O'Callaghan said, "We were outside having a barbecue with the three cats at our feet,", followed by, "and then she just disappeared.".

"She usually doesn't go that far but then I got the horrific phone call that she had been found, and it was just dreadfully upsetting."

Finola and her husband David found out from a local that Bella had been found "barbarically" killed and tied up approximately six miles from their home at the entrance to the woods at Glentrasna South.

Finola said that Bella was found "hanging from a bar in the woods.. in a horrific, sadistic and brutal butchering.".

"The way she was hung up it was menacing, threatening, where she was was in a very public place. The road is quiet but to tie her to the entrance to the woods, it was deliberate, it felt targeted,"

"It was just so distressing, I went down to identify her body, and I will forever be left with that image, I will never get it out of my head,"

"I haven't slept since this happened, I feel like I can't let my other cats see the light of day with someone who is capable of doing this to a totally innocent animal living within our community."

After an only comment by someone stating that Bella might have been killed after being hit by a vehicle and then Bella was hung up for her owner to find her, Finola said in response, "If you'd seen the totally disrespectful manner in which way this beautiful animal was 'hung' you would be under no illusion that this was just some 'random accident' unfortunately.".

"This psychopath will strike again. Our hearts are broken that such a sadistic and heinous act could be carried out on such a beautiful and innocent animal."

"She was just beautiful, a ball of love,". Finola is urging others in the community to "watch their pets, just mind them.".

Fermoy Gardai have launched an investigation into the incident. Roadworks in the area meant that at the time of Bella's disappearance, traffic was being diverted down the usually quiet road where her body was found and Finola has asked that anyone who saw someone "acting suspiciously or may have dashcam footage" between the Ardglass Cross area and Clonmult to speak with Gardaí.
