A 16th century structure sitting on the edge of Lough Sheelin is known as Ross Castle. Built in 1533 Ross Castle has survived today and it's possible to stay at and rent out the castle for a holiday or an event.
There are a few well known stories of ghostly occurrences at Ross Castle and a few lesser known ones, we shall keep the lesser known stories for visitors of Ross Castle so as to not dilute the bone chilling experiences some people have reported while at the castle.
The majority of reports at Ross Castle seem to hinge around the daughter of Richard Nugent and English Lord, the 12th Lord of Delvin. The story started in 1536 at the castle which we know as Ross Castle today, when the 'Black Baron' aka Richard Nugent who was of bad repute due to being very hard on the people that lived on the land he controlled.
Nugent had a daughter named Sabina who had poor health but nonetheless continued on with her life. Sabina was liked by the village folk and would frequent the shores of Lough Sheelin. Sabina was usually accompanied by a governess but was known to sneak out without anyone watching her and this lead to a chance encounter with a young man named Orwin of a warring clan with the Black Baron, Orwin was the son of the O'Reilly chieftain.
The two would continue to meet up in secret and as time went on they fell madly in love and with the prospect of no future together due to them both coming from warring clans they decided to elope and one night they met on the shore of Lough Sheelin and boarded a row boat. As Sabina and Orwin made their way across Lough Sheelin a sudden storm which was not unexpected on the Lough rolled in and sudden swell caused the row boat to capsize sending Sabina and Orwin into the chillingly cold water of the Lough. Sabina was rescued but wouldn't regain consciousness for 3 days but Orwin was lost to the Lough that night and his body was eventually recovered from Lough Sheelin.
Once Sabina regained consciousness and was able to process what had taken place she fell into deep despair with the loss of her true love with whom she had spent many days planning their future together. So lost that Sabina felt that she would lock herself in the tower of Ross Castle, not eat or drink until she succumbed to lack of food or water.
The ghost of Sabina has been reported to have been encountered within Ross Castle with many different reported encounters. The history of the Black Baron's cruel treatment of people and his quick judgements that took the life of at least one innocent beggar is said to be the cause of the Black Baron's ghost being seen around the Ross Castle grounds.
There are much darker entities reported to have been encountered at Ross Castle, we may touch on these at a future date.
