Visitors at Tayto Park had to hide in a secure gift shop in March 2022 when one female adult and two juveniles escaped from their enclosure.
In an email which is assumed was to the National Parks and Wildlife Service who manage zoo licences in the Republic of Ireland, a staff member for Tayto Park said, "The incident was resolved quickly and efficiently by staff following the emergency drills we have in place,".
A spokesperson for Tayto Park confirmed the escape and went on to say that there was a very short risk to visitors, "there were multiple members of the zookeeping staff implementing our Animal Escape Plan and herding the bison back to its paddock."
The spokesperson went on to say that visitors were only confined to the gift shop for 10 minutes.
Bison are the largest land dwelling mammals in their native North America, growing up to two metres tall and weighing up to a tonne. They are known to be aggressive and territorial, and can run at speeds of up to 48kph.
