Crimean-Congo Virus Diagnosed In Man In Spain's Castile And Leon Region

A single case of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has been confirmed in Spain's Castile and Leon region.

CCHF, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) has a fatality rate of between 10% and 40%.

CCHF is mostly found in Africa , the Balkans, the Middle East and Asia but is not unknown to be found in Europe.

The virus is transmitted between humans by close contact with bodily fluids or blood.

The case in Spain, the middle aged man was first admitted to a local hospital in the northwestern city of Leon showing symptoms of the disease after reportedly having been bitten by a tick. The man was later transferred to another hospital via a military aircraft, the Defense Ministry said.

A local health official has said, "He has a tick bite and remains in a stable condition, despite the clinical severity that this pathology implies,"
