Monkeypox Latest Update from Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC)
Science/Medical/Technology
Wednesday 8th, June 2022
There are now seven confirmed cases of monkeypox within Ireland as of 7th of June 2022 the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) has said.
All seven of the cases are male aged between 30 to 50 years of age with the median age being 37 years old. The HPSC says that the cases are not unexpected following the presence of monkeypox cases in the United Kingdom and many European countries.
Pubic Health is following up on each confirmed case for close contacts as well as health risk assessments being carried out.
The confirmation of seven cases of monkeypox in Ireland comes after over seven hundred cases of monkeypox have been reported across Europe, North America as well as other countries in recent weeks. It's been reported that the vast majority of these cases have no travel links to countries where monkeypox is endemic.
Many countries have reported that the cases are predominantly, but not exclusively, in men who self-identify as gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men (gbMSM).
