A HSE official has come out today saying that Ireland needs to prepare for additional monkeypox cases. Even with this statement today from Dr. Derval Igoe it is expected that more cases will surface within Ireland as the cases of monkeypox increases globally.
Dr. Derval Igoe is the Chair of the HSE Monkeypox Incident Management Team in Ireland and has said that the four cases in Ireland so far are not linked to any travel to West Africa. Dr. Igoe has also said of the "need to be prepared for more cases to come".
Dr. Igoe said all parts of the health service have systems in place, whereby if someone indicates they might have symptoms, measures are put in place.
Monkeypox is endemic in eleven countries in West and Central Africa. Monkeypox is spread by direct contact with infected blood, meat or bodily fluids as well as by a bite.
Dr Cillian de Gascun, Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory said it is very difficult to predict what is going to happen over the coming weeks with regards to monkeypox but that there will be more cases.
