Earl Grey Anderson, State Director of Southern California MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) and a distinguished voice in the study of unidentified aerial phenomena, has died aged 75. A tireless advocate for those reporting encounters with non-human entities, Anderson devoted his life to investigation, education, and public discourse in the field of ufology.

Earl's dautgher posted on Earl's Facebook page today breaking the terrible news,
This is Earl’s daughter again, here to share the unbearable news that my dad, Earl “Grey” Anderson passed away this morning at 4:04am. This time last week he had improved radically; he was still sick with cancer, but he was back to his old self: cracking jokes, waxing poetic, and looking forward to seeing you all again. We were all certain he was going to get better. On Monday, April 21st he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the hospital, and has been on life support ever since. Our dad and our family has endured a harrowing week of interventions and assessments; after trying every solution possible, it became clear that it was his time to go. He passed peacefully this morning with his beloved Lisa by his side. Know that he was never once alone in the hospital. He has been surrounded by his loving wife, two daughters, his son, and his eldest grandson. And I’m sure he felt your love from afar. My dad was a powerful force; this loss will take ages to process for all of us, and we appreciate your love and your patience as we grieve and manage his affairs in our private ways. All I can say now is: I love you, Dad, to the moons of Jupiter and back again. Thank you for sharing yourself so fully with the world. Shine on you crazy diamond

Anderson’s early fascination with the unknown shaped his future path. Throughout his life, he combined scientific discipline with deep empathy, believing that the key to understanding the phenomena was not merely in data collection, but in respecting and listening to those who experienced it first-hand. "Listening is the most important thing we do," he often said.

During his career, Anderson investigated more than 900 UFO cases, becoming one of MUFON’s most trusted field investigators. He specialised in cases of "High Strangeness" - events that defy conventional explanation - and became a central figure on MUFON’s Experiencer Resource Team (ERT). His focus was on individuals reporting direct, face-to-face contact with non-human intelligences, often supporting them through what could be life-altering revelations. "The experiencer phenomenon is the core of ufology," Anderson declared, a belief that guided his professional ethos.

One of Anderson’s investigations was awarded "Case of the Year" at the 2021 MUFON Symposium, a recognition of both the importance of the case and the meticulousness of his approach. He was also a senior member of MUFON’s STAR Team, which responded rapidly to sightings involving physical evidence or national security concerns.

Outside of fieldwork, Anderson was passionate about education. He developed and taught an accredited course on ufology at the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, a rare academic offering that encouraged rigorous critical thinking alongside openness to new ideas. His commitment to raising the profile of serious ufology was unwavering.

Media appearances brought Anderson’s expertise to a global audience. He featured in episodes of Ancient Aliens on The History Channel and appeared in The UAP Disclosure Files on Netflix. He was also a central figure in several documentaries by filmmaker Jeremy Norrie, where his thoughtful analysis and calming presence distinguished him from many more sensationalist commentators. Frequent guest spots on Coast to Coast AM allowed Anderson to engage with the public directly, reinforcing his reputation as a thoughtful, compassionate investigator.

Anderson was a popular speaker at major events, notably the McMenamins UFO Festival in McMinnville, Oregon, one of the largest and longest-running festivals of its kind. There, he shared insights from his extensive casework and offered hope and solidarity to experiencers seeking understanding.

Throughout his life, Anderson was based in Los Angeles, where he lived with his wife and their two beloved cats. Though his work often led him into the mysteries of the cosmos, his personal life was grounded in kindness, loyalty, and community. He remained a full-time investigator and educator until the end of his life, never losing his sense of wonder or his commitment to service.

Earl Grey Anderson leaves behind a legacy of compassion, intellectual honesty, and unwavering dedication to the search for truth. He challenged the world to listen carefully to those whose experiences defy easy categorisation, and to seek understanding rather than judgement. His contributions to the field of ufology will continue to resonate for years to come.
