A Pennsylvania man is facing multiple charges, including first degree murder, after allegedly shooting his long term partner in what he claims was an act of self defence during a drug induced paranoia episode.

Jared Wolfe, 46, allegedly confessed to police that he shot Jane A. White, 46, on the 3rd of January after becoming convinced that his life was in imminent danger. The incident occurred while the couple was at a friend's house consuming drugs. Wolfe's arrest followed a call to emergency services by his brother, who reported that Wolfe had confessed to him about the shooting.

During a court hearing on Tuesday, the presiding judge ruled that Wolfe would stand trial on all seven charges against him. These include first degree murder, third degree murder, a third degree felony count of carrying a firearm without a licence, first and second degree felonies of aggravated assault, as well as second degree misdemeanours for simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

Wolfe and White had been in a relationship for seven years before attending a gathering at a friend’s house on the night of the shooting. Initially, Wolfe told police that the group had smoked marijuana together, as reported by The Daily Item, but later claimed he was unsure what substance they had consumed.

Court documents filed by Sunbury police reveal that Wolfe told officers he had used a "paranormal meter" to check a statue for "energy" after taking the drug. He claimed to have "received a high reading of paranormal activity", which heightened his fear and paranoia.

According to his statement to police, Wolfe believed that he was in immediate danger from his friend, whom he suspected of attempting to cover his mouth with a white rag laced with an unknown substance.

"Wolfe stated he thought that Jane White (and the friends) were all trying to kill him and eat him, so he panicked and ran out of the house to retrieve his handgun from his vehicle", Sunbury police officer Tray Kurtz wrote in the arrest affidavit.

In a panicked state, Wolfe retrieved his gun from his car and loaded a live round into the chamber. According to police documents, he did not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

White followed Wolfe to the car and, when she opened the front passenger door, he fired a shot in what he later described as self-defence. However, he admitted that he did not see White holding a weapon.

When questioned in a second police interview about whether it was possible that White was merely opening the door to join him, believing he was leaving, Wolfe reportedly responded, "That's a good question".

By the time emergency responders arrived at the scene, White had succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest. Northumberland County Coroner Jim Kelley later confirmed her death.

Following the shooting, Wolfe drove approximately 8 kilometres to his brother's house, where he still had the gun in his hand when he allegedly confessed to the killing. His brother immediately called 911, leading to Wolfe's swift arrest. Authorities later recovered the weapon, along with an additional firearm, during a warranted search of Wolfe's vehicle, where they also found his "paranormal meter."

When asked why he fled instead of helping his partner, Wolfe reportedly responded, "I was too messed up".
