A search operation is in progress for a missing aircraft that was carrying ten people when it disappeared off the coast of Alaska. The Bering Air flight departed from Unalakleet at 14:38 local time on Thursday but lost contact less than an hour later, according to the company’s operations director, David Olson.
Authorities are working to determine the aircraft’s last known position. The United States Coast Guard reported that the Cessna Grand Caravan was approximately 19 kilometres offshore as it flew across Norton Sound. Data from flight tracking website Flightradar24 recorded the aircraft at an altitude of 1,615 metres before contact was lost.
The plane was en route from Unalakleet, a small community of around 690 residents in western Alaska, to Nome, a historic gold rush town located just south of the Arctic Circle. The journey typically takes just under an hour.
In a Facebook post, the Nome Fire Department stated: “We are currently doing an active ground search from Nome and from White Mountain”. The department also urged the public not to form individual search parties, citing concerns over weather conditions and safety, “We ask the public to please think of those who may be missing at this time, but due to weather and safety concerns please do not form individual search parties”.
Weather reports from the US National Weather Service indicated that conditions at the time of departure included a temperature of -8.3°C, with fog and light snowfall. These factors may have contributed to the incident.
Bering Air is a regional airline serving 32 remote villages in western Alaska, where air travel is often the only means of covering long distances, particularly during the winter months. The company is actively coordinating with emergency services. “Staff at Bering Air is working hard to gather details, get emergency assistance, search and rescue going”, said Mr Olson.
The incident follows two major air accidents in the United States in recent weeks. In Washington, D.C., a mid-air collision between a jet and a helicopter resulted in 67 fatalities, while in Philadelphia, a medical plane crash claimed the lives of seven people.
Search and rescue teams continue to operate despite challenging weather conditions, and updates are expected as efforts progress.
Alaska has long been known for its unexplained disappearances and mysterious events, with many incidents remaining unsolved. The vast and often unforgiving wilderness, combined with extreme weather conditions, has contributed to the many unknowns surrounding lost aircraft, missing persons, and other strange occurrences. Nome, in particular, has a history of unexplained disappearances, with several cases over the years never being solved, adding to the region's eerie reputation.
Disappearances over the Years in Nome
Alaska has long been known for its unexplained disappearances and mysterious events, with many incidents remaining unsolved. Nome, in particular, has a history of unexplained disappearances, with several cases over the years never being solved, adding to the region's eerie reputation. The 2009 film The Fourth Kind popularized the idea that alien abductions were linked to missing people in Nome. While the film was fictional, it was loosely inspired by the town’s real-life disappearances. Some residents claim to have seen strange lights or had bizarre experiences, fueling conspiracy theories.
In 2005 and 2006, after numerous missing person reports, the FBI investigated cases of disappearances in Nome. The official conclusion attributed most cases to alcohol-related incidents and exposure to the elements. However, some skeptics believe the FBI may have overlooked potential criminal activity or other unexplained causes.
Regardless of the questions in Nome's history we hope the Plane is found soon and the families get closure on what happened the aircraft.
