Shackleton's ship, the Endurance has been found in Antarctica after it was lost at sea in 1915. The "world's most challenging shipwreck search" for a ship which has it's own place in the history of exploration.

What is left of Endurance was found 3,008 metres below the surface of what was described by Shackleton as "the worst portion of the worst sea in the world". The Endurance wreck was found on Saturday the 5th March 2022, the 100 year anniversary of Shackleton's funeral said the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust.

The Endurance was found by the Endurance22 expedition which set off from Cape Town a month ago and Dr. John Shears said the expedition has "reached its goal". Dr. Shears is a veteran geographer who led the Endurance22 expedition.

"We have made polar history with the discovery of Endurance, and successfully completed the world’s most challenging shipwreck search.", said Dr. Shears.

The Endurance was found approximately four miles south of the last position originally recorded by its captain, Frank Worsley. The Endurance was last seen as it sank after it was crushed by ice and sank in the Weddell Sean in November 1915.

Mensun Bound, the expedition’s director of exploration, said footage showed the 144 foot ship to be intact.

"We are overwhelmed by our good fortune in having located and captured images of Endurance," Mensun said. He further went on to say, "This is by far the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen. It is upright, well proud of the seabed, intact, and in a brilliant state of preservation … This is a milestone in polar history.".

The resting place/site of Endurance was declared a historic monument under the terms of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty.
