Lucy Kennedy, 48, receives a shock in her new show Real Life with Lucy, which explores the world of psychics and the spirit world. During the series, which airs on Virgin Media One, Lucy investigates whether psychics hold real merit or are simply skilled in manipulation.

In one striking moment, Lucy meets with Natasha Bracken, a self-described "white witch" who claims to be "50 per cent human and 50 per cent spirit". Bracken, who says she has experienced 15 past lives, uses divining rods to connect with Lucy’s spiritual history.

During the session, Natasha reveals to Lucy that she is currently in her tenth life, and in her second, she lived as a nun. According to Natasha, Lucy was forced into a convent at the age of 19 and suffered greatly during this time. Pointing to Lucy's stomach, Natasha explains: "This is where you’ve been tortured, down into your second dimension. You’re 19, and you were placed in the convent against your will". Lucy responds by feeling physically uneasy, with cold feet and a growing sense of nausea.

The session concludes with Natasha conducting a "healing" ritual to cleanse Lucy’s negative energy. Despite her discomfort, Lucy leaves the experience intrigued by the possibility of her past life, though also somewhat unsettled. Natasha urges Lucy to care for herself, remarking, "Your body is very broken as it’s very tired".

Alongside this spiritual exploration, Lucy meets parapsychologist Ian Cox, who warns of the risks involved in trusting psychic readings. Cox highlights the danger of "cold reading", a method some psychics use to gather subtle clues from their clients and feed information back as if it were a profound revelation. He explains, "Cold reading is something that you need to be very careful of, that you’re not giving the medium information that they’re then feeding back to you as a sort of revelation when you are vulnerable and when you want to believe".

Cox also urges caution when attending psychic sessions, stressing that psychic claims are "somebody’s opinion" rather than "evidence" or "fact". He adds, "People attend psychics and take that as evidence, as truth, and that can cause devastation and mayhem".

However, Cox acknowledges that some elements of psychic phenomena may be plausible. Referring to recent research, he notes that the right hemisphere of the brain could be responsible for unconscious experiences, which might explain sensations like déjà vu. "It could have been passed down through the ages so that when they walked into somewhere they find it’s familiar," he said. Lucy, intrigued by this explanation, responds, "Like déjà vu? There’s my hope right there".

In another segment of the episode, Lucy travels to the Hill of Uisneach in County Westmeath, Ireland. Known as the "Sacred Centre of Ireland", the site is steeped in spiritual significance and hosts an annual festival celebrating Irish heritage and spirituality. Lucy explores why so many people are drawn to these spiritual practices and beliefs.

Real Life with Lucy airs tonight, 7th October 2024, at 9 p.m. on Virgin Media One and Virgin Media Player.
